Postgraduate Program in Biosciences and Biotechnology in Health (BBS)

The BBS is formed mainly by full-time researchers employed at the Aggeu Magalhães Institute (IAM - a FIOCRUZ research center based at the state of Pernambuco) and was established with the purpose of forming highly trained professionals qualified in areas of excellence linked to the basic and applied research in health-related topics. PPGBBS offers free educational training at both the Master's and Doctorate levels. It is included within the assessment area of Biological Sciences III from CAPES (Brazilian Agency for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel). This area comprises the subareas of Immunology, Microbiology, and Parasitology, with the program currently being classified by Capes with the grade 5 (the topmost grade being 7).  

The focus of PPGBBS is the generation of scientific knowledge and the development of new methodologies for monitoring and controlling pathogens, vectors, and various current diseases, combining basic research studies with the application of biotechnological tools. The topics investigated by its faculty and students range from clinical trials and validation of new therapies/vaccines/diagnostic methods to studies using new generation technologies that make use of cutting-edge tools in genomics, proteomics, cell biology, microbiology, protein chemistry, and advanced immunology, among others. The PPGBBS mission is the qualified training of young academic researchers and the generation of scientific knowledge as well as new biotechnological products that might have an impact on the health of the general population. We thus hope to contribute to the demands of the Unified Health System (SUS) from Brazil and promote general health, while enhancing the contribution of the Brazilian Northeastern Region to the overall research community and to the general biotechnology field.
